Recently, the research group of Professor Xiong Yujie, University of Science and Technology of China, found that metal crystal planes have an important regulation effect on the activation of oxygen molecules. At the same time, the work was also reported on February 25 by the US "Chemical & Engineering News" (Chemical & Engineering News).
The electron spin state in oxygen molecules is the key to affecting the activity of species in many chemical and biological systems. The cross-disciplinary cooperation of synchrotron radiation technology and other disciplines revealed for the first time the adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules on different palladium crystal planes. Through reasonable selection of crystal planes, the molecular spin state of oxygen molecules can be spontaneously induced during molecular adsorption. This breakthrough is helpful to promote the development of cancer photothermotherapeutic material design, and is of great significance to clarify the principle of the widespread use of metal catalysts in the oxidation reaction of the organic chemistry community.
